A Day in the Life of a Cognitive Clinician

Each day as a clinician can certainly look different. While we do have a program in place that we follow, we are always adapting to the needs of our kiddos! Since we see clients ages 5-21, there are a lot of skills we can help with. Below are just some tasks we do to ensure their learning success!

● Get to know the kiddos and what makes them happy

● Talk with parents about their questions and concerns

● Play cognitive games like Spot It, Blink, or Uno to improve a kiddos processing speed, working memory, and logic and reasoning skills

● Help kiddos learn the proper letter sounds through our auditory drills

● Visit the gym for some play time

● Provide strategies to help kiddos with their Cogmed exercises

● Have a cold Dr. Pepper for a pick me up

● Model how to write our letters

● Show a kiddo their new Cogmed account and how to build a cool city ● Talk about blending sounds together to make words, and sometimes make up silly ones of our own

● Make a target run to find new games

● Prep for the ACT by working through each subject

● Share strategies to help with timed tests

● Help a kiddo work on visual memory by learning all of the U.S. Presidents using pictures and play on words

● Teach a child how to advocate for themselves and how they learn best ● Provide encouragement to kiddos and their support system

● Work on spelling and sight words

● Show a kiddo our Interactive Metronome and all of the cool visual effects we can watch while practicing our neural timing skills

● Help a kiddo pick out their favorite squishee as a reward for working so hard

● Find activities to make learning fun

● Write reports and emails to keep you informed

● Read and be read to

● Play Simon Says to help with executive functioning skills like following directions

● Write encouraging notes to let the kids know how proud I am of them

Our days are long, but never dull! Our kiddos make each session fun and we always look forward to seeing them and sharing in their success. Our main goal is to provide your child with the tools they need to succeed both inside and outside of the classroom. I love working with kiddos to reignite that love for learning and see that “lightbulb” moment!
