Finding the Right Shoe Fit for Orthotics

Some children require orthotics, commonly referred to as braces, to help support their overall lower extremity alignment. Orthotics could be needed for a variety of reasons but are ultimately meant to help children with better positioning. There are three main styles of orthotics that are commonly used in the pediatric population as pictured below.

1. AFOs (ankle foot orthoses)

2. SMOs (supramalleolar orthoses)

3. Inserts that take place of typical insoles in shoes. Below are called “Chipmunks”.

These orthotics can come in different styles, however they all have some impact on how shoes fit. To find shoes that best accommodate these orthotics, it is recommended to focus on two things: a wide toe box and removable insoles. Kiddos with orthotics often need wide or even extra wide shoes. The removable insole allows for the added extra height and the child’s foot to fit in the shoe properly. There are a few brands that I find families often turn to including: New Balance, Billy Footwear, See Kai Run, and Hatchback Shoes. There are plenty of other options, it just may be more challenging to find ones that fit the best. I would highly recommend talking to the orthotist when you receive the new orthotics or take them with you when you go to find shoes. If you’re questioning anything about shoe fit, feel free to reach out to your child’s orthotist or physical therapist. We are more than happy to help and may have more resources for you at our disposal. Bring any and all questions to your child’s appointment!
